In Ethiopia, waste wood, once considered only a matter of disposal costs, is now being continuously fed into a production line operating day and night. This turnkey project—a continuous carbonization and briquetting plant—has successfully passed its trial operation phase and officially entered commercial production.
The project's importance extends far beyond the plant itself. Charcoal remains the primary fuel for daily cooking in most Ethiopian households, and demand continues to rise with urbanization. However, the vast majority of charcoal is still produced in traditional earthen kilns; this process not only results in a significant loss of wood as smoke during firing but is also widely considered a major contributor to deforestation and land degradation.
The entire production process is simple and straightforward: first, the wood chips are dried, then fed into a sealed kiln for heating; the wood chips are carbonized inside the kiln rather than burned directly. The generated waste gas is recycled and used as a heat source to heat the furnace body, so once the system is preheated, the production line can basically achieve self-sufficiency. The carbonized material is crushed, pressed into shape, and dried to ensure good transport stability. Most of the finished product is supplied to urban households for cooking; higher-density, high-quality charcoal blocks are sold to restaurants and barbecue vendors, bringing higher economic benefits.
