A coconut shell carbonization machine is an integrated system designed to convert coconut shells into charcoal (carbonized material) through high-temperature pyrolysis in an oxygen-deprived or low-oxygen environment. Utilizing a continuous, externally heated rotary kiln, the equipment enables continuous feeding, multi-stage temperature-controlled carbonization, and continuous charcoal discharge. It is well-suited for small-to-medium-scale charcoal production facilities in major coconut-growing regions, as well as for the preliminary processing of raw materials for activated carbon production.

After being crushed and screened, the coconut shells are continuously fed into the rotary kiln. Heated by an external heat source, the kiln is divided into three distinct temperature zones: a drying zone (approx. 100–150°C) to remove surface and some bound moisture; a carbonization zone (approx. 400–600°C), where cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin decompose, volatile components are released, and fixed carbon content increases; and a cooling zone, where the discharge end—equipped with a water-cooled or air-cooled jacket—lowers the charcoal temperature to a safe range, preventing re-ignition upon exiting the kiln. Combustible gases generated during carbonization are purified and routed back to the combustion chamber to serve as a heat source, creating a partially self-sustaining thermal cycle that reduces the need for external fuel. Exhaust gases undergo tar removal, scrubbing, and dust filtration before being discharged in a controlled manner.
Performance Features
1. Continuous Production: Features continuous feeding and discharge, ensuring stable daily processing capacity per line with minimal manual labor requirements.
2. Multi-Stage Temperature Control: Independent control across different temperature zones prevents over-burning of the thin coconut shells or under-processing of the core, ensuring consistent product quality.
3. Heat and Combustible Gas Recovery: Combustible gases produced during carbonization are recycled for heating, allowing for effective control of fuel costs.
4. Versatile Raw Material Compatibility: Capable of processing coconut shells, as well as other hard-shell materials—such as palm shells, walnut shells, and apricot shells—and biomass like wood chips or straw.
5. Environmentally Compliant Design: Includes centralized tar collection and multi-stage flue gas purification; options for dust removal systems and interfaces for online emissions monitoring are available. Modular Configuration: Throughput capacity, reactor length, and heating methods can be customized to meet specific project requirements; full-line turnkey delivery is available.
Suitable Feedstocks and Finished Products
1. Feedstocks: Fruit shells (such as coconut shells—whole or crushed—palm shells, walnut shells, apricot shells, and peach shells) and biomass (such as wood chips, rice husks, and straw).
2. Finished Products: Carbonized coconut shell material, characterized by high fixed-carbon content, low ash content, and a well-developed microporous structure. It serves as a raw material for producing coconut-shell-based activated carbon and is also used for applications such as barbecue charcoal, metallurgical reducing agents, and soil amendments.
Applications include the preparation of raw materials for coconut-shell activated carbon, water treatment filter media, gold-adsorption carbon, air-purification carbon, food-grade decolorizing carbon, as well as the production of barbecue charcoal and industrial reducing carbon.
